About This Collection
This collection includes photographic collections from the American Catholic History Research Center and University Archives at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. These collections contain images and prints of the Catholic University of America buildings and grounds, faculty, students, and University community from different periods of it's history.
Bishop John J. Keane CUA Photographic Album:
This 30 page Photographic Album was created as a going away present for the University's first Rector (President) by the faculty of the University. It includes 47 images, including the faculty and buildings / grounds of the University as it appeared in 1896. The album is bound like a book and was included in the Loras College Library Collection (Dubuque, Iowa ) until 1997 when it was donated to the University Archives.
Lawrence F. Wright Photographic Collection:
This series of 73 images were created/collected by Mr. L.W. Wright during his time at CUA (1917 - 1921). They include images of the CUA buildings and grounds, community, events, and the rapid growth that took place at CUA during the early 1920's. The images have been removed from the album which originally contained them, due to deterioration. The family of Mr. Wright graciously donated the collection to the University in 2005.
This scrapbook was compiled by James Michael Carroll while he was a student at The Catholic University of America (Washington, DC) from 1916 to 1920. Following an active tenure at CUA, he graduated in 1920 with a Bachelors of Science. He assembled this collection of photographs (many of which he took himself) and ephemera with a particular emphasis on the CUA baseball team (of which he was a member) and other athletic events at CUA. In addition to the photographs of CUA (which include the campus, students, and events), the scrapbook contains examples of exams, dance cards/books, tickets for different events/ attractions at CUA and in DC. These materials provide a glimpse into what student life was like during the early part of the twentieth century at CUA. This digital collection can be viewed in two different versions. Researchers can virtually "flip" through the pages of the scrapbook, viewing items in greater detail, and explore items included in the pages by clicking on highlighted items. Researchers can also browse images of the individual pages in the scrapbook in a more traditional format without the "flipping" effect. Each individual item in the scrapbook is indexed so that the collection can be searched using a variety of criteria. The Carroll Scrapbook was transferred to the CUA Archives as part of materials belonging to the CUA Department of Athletics. The scrapbook contains 280 items and has a total of 77 pages.
